To use motorways in the Czech Republic, you must have a valid vignette. The total length of motorway sections in operation is 1388.2 km.

You can choose from four types of vignettes: annual, monthly, ten-day, or one-day. All common motor fuels such as petrol, diesel, liquid natural gas (LPG), and electricity for electric vehicles are allowed on the motorways. Check if you have a valid vignette and see what the penalties are for not having one. We’ve also got a round-up of all the news and changes coming in 2024.

Electronic vignettes in Europe

Validation of the Vignette

Check the validity of your electronic vignette! Simply enter your vehicle registration number on the website and you will receive information about the status of your vignette in a moment. You will not only find out whether the vignette is valid, but also whether your vehicle is exempt from the vignette requirement. With this quick check, you can be sure that you are ready to hit the highways.

Vignette Check and Fines

Supervision is carried out by the Police of the Czech Republic and the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic. They can identify vehicles and check whether you have a valid electronic vignette or whether your vehicle is exempt from this obligation.

How are these checks carried out?

The checks take place directly on toll motorway sections and use various methods, including camera systems that reliably identify the vehicle registration plate.

What is the amount of the fine?

If you are caught using a motorway section without a valid electronic vignette and you are not exempt from this obligation, the fines can reach up to CZK 20,000.

If the exemption is found to have been abused, the fine can be up to CZK 100,000.

Am I Obliged to Get a Vignette?

If your motor vehicle has at least four wheels and a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes, you must obtain an electronic vignette before entering a toll motorway.

However, there are vehicles that are exempt from this requirement, such as motorcycles and trailers. These vehicles are not required to have an electronic vignette.

Electronic Vignette 2024

Changes in Prices of Vignette

The new year has brought many changes on the Czech motorways, one of which is the adjustment of motorway toll prices. From March 2024, the price of the annual vignette will increase to CZK 2,300. This increase is a result of the rise in inflation and the fact that the price of vignettes has remained unchanged for the last 10 years. Other types of vignettes have either become slightly cheaper or have remained unchanged.

Benefits for Zero CO₂ Emission Vehicles

A nice new feature in 2024 is that vehicles powered only by electricity or hydrogen will be exempt from paying vignettes. These vehicles will be automatically identified by special registration plates that will be assigned to them. Owners of zero CO₂ emitting vehicles will be entitled to this exemption.

Convenient Fuel Options

Conventional Fuels

Prices for motorway vignettes for vehicles powered by petrol or diesel remain at standard levels. An annual vignette for these vehicles costs £2,500, which is price for unlimited access to motorways for a whole year.

Alternative Fuels

Vehicles powered by alternative fuels (CNG, LNG, Biomethane) are entitled to discounted vignette prices. The annual electronic vignette for these vehicles costs a half the price of the vignette for vehicles using traditional fuels.

Hybrid Vehicles

For low CO₂ emitting vehicles (with maximum emissions of 50 g/km), even lower vignette prices apply. The annual electronic vignette for these vehicles costs only CZK 770. This pricing policy reflects a desire to promote greener vehicle propulsion alternatives.

Electric vehicles

For pure electric vehicles, the use of motorways is completely free of charge, as the cost of motorway vignettes is waived for them. This benefit is consistent with efforts to promote the use of electric vehicles as an environmentally friendly and to encourage a shift to cleaner modes of transportation.

News in Transport

Higher Speed Limit on Motorways

Planned changes to the Czech Republic’s traffic regulations suggest a future increase in the maximum speed limit on motorways. Under the new proposal, drivers could soon be allowed to drive at speeds of up to 150 km/h, 20 km/h more than the current limit of 130 km/h. This planned change is intended to improve the comfort and efficiency of motorway travel in the Czech Republic.

Electronic Driving Licence

The new option allows drivers to travel in the Czech Republic without carrying a physical driving licence. Thanks to the eDoklady app, it is now possible to have your driving licence stored directly on your mobile device. All you need is to have the eDoklady mobile app installed and your driving licence loaded into the system. This innovation brings greater convenience and practicality for drivers, who do not need to carry their physical licence with them at all times, but can have it available on their smartphone at any time.

Motorway Charges in Europe 2024

Toll Systems

In some European Union countries, toll gates are used to pay for motorway use. In France and Italy, for example, toll gates are the standard method of payment. Drivers pass through these gates and pay either in cash or through electronic payment systems.

Motorway vignettes

In Austria and Switzerland, motorway stamps are a common way to pay for motorway use. Drivers must purchase a valid vignette, either at border crossing points or at points of sale. This stamp is placed on the windscreen of the vehicle and is valid for a certain period of time.

Electronic toll systems

In countries, such as Germany and Slovakia, electronic toll systems are in operation. Drivers have special electronic devices that automatically identify the vehicle when it passes through a toll gate. Charges are then automatically deducted from the subscription or account associated with the device.
